What is "adf" in the context of JForum (which this forum is all about)?

ADF is a development framework provided by Oracle. It allows you to build web application by drag-drop (mostly). I don't think JForum has anything to do with ADF. I have linked this question to the "Other Application Frameworks" forum

ADF life cycle is described in detail here
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
