Software Engineer

As a Software Engineer, you will be working with the Combat Management Systems (CMS) and Shared Infrastructure (SI) teams to develop these exciting products. We produce software in house and combine this with commercial products and hardware. Our CMS products provide situational awareness and weapon control to meet multiple emergent threats in blue
water and littoral operations. SI, our new state of the art computing equipment, has the capability to access all software, such as the CMS, navigation, communications and sonar, needed to operate the ship's combat systems through a single console.

Your main responsibilities as a Software Engineer will involve:
As this is a junior role, we understand that the most critical thing you need to do is learn: learn how we do things, learn how our systems fit together, learn new skills and learn how to make the best software you can. We will try to help you as much as possible to achieve your goals.
The exact nature of your role will depend upon matching your experience, skills and aspirations to the work required but could include:
• Designing new software components to form part of our Combat Management Systems
• Writing new code and maintaining existing software by investigating issues and identifying solutions
• Potentially supporting integration trials at dedicated sites or on ship
• Suggesting innovative ways to improve the products and the way we work
• Ensuring the software you produce is tested effectively
• Identifying strategies to reduce re-work and mitigate risk
• Recording designs and other important information, so that other engineers can understand the software and the systems
You’ll be working under the direction of the a Software team leader and other senior team members. Your skills and qualifications will ideally include:
You will need to demonstrate knowledge in at least some of the following disciplines:
• Software Design
• Configuration Management
• Coding standards
• Software Integration &
testing
• Windows Active Directory and Domain knowledge
• VMWare
• Networks
• Scripting: VB Script, PowerShell, Batch Job
• Programming: ADA, C++, C#, .net framework
Ideally, you will have experience working with complex systems in an IT, Engineering or defence industry
What we are looking for:
You will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well as part of a team.
You must be willing to occasionally work off-site at land-based combat system integration sites, supplier sites and on-board Royal Navy platforms as part of this role.
