Small MMO Networking

Hello, I've been attempting to make a small 2D MMO that has a few RPG elements. It is really to learn more about networking and how that relates to games but in the past few weeks I've had a lot of trouble nailing down a good library/framework/API to use that handles a lot of the interpolation, low-level networking, rooms, channels, and users and leaves the front-end development to me. My biggest problem is interpolation/input prediction/lag compensation and anything to do with smoothing out variables like the position or any other type I may need. I really liked SmartFox but still couldn't figure out the smoothing part of it. Does anyone have any code examples, advice, and anything related to this that would help? Thanks in advance.
