is it ok to use java 8 and learn from java 5 book?  RSS feed

Hi there,
i am starting with head first java 2nd edition which covers java 5. but i have installed latest java in my system, which is java 8 from java.sun.com.
is it ok to use java 8 and learn from java 5 book???
anyone help will be great.

Yes Java is backwards compatible so everything in the book will work using Java 8. The only thing you will miss out on is features added since Java 5 but I wouldn't worry about that at this stage.

so that means i can also use java se 8 API, which is the latest?

another thing is, i need to know basic structure for java, basic variables types like integers etc. everything which is required for learning at beginning stage as i cannot see in head first for java 5 book. could i get this online???
