Hi All,

This question is not related to java, sorry about posting it here, I needed attention urgently, thats why I am posting it here

I got http://www.amazon.com/Programmer-Study-1Z0-803-1Z0-804-Certification/dp/0071772006 book few days back, now that I am trying to install a CD it gives following error.

"The application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged. Try obtaining a new installer file from the application author".

The instructions about installation says. If you have any problems while installing it unable your antivirus or internet sequrity programs. I dont have any one of them in my computer.

Does any one knows what might the problem be?
Where should I go for help?

I need it by end of December, please help.

Kind regards,
Prathima

Another member had this problem and suggests a workaround. Can you try it and reply in this thread whether that works?

Hi Prathima,

Since the book was published, there have been 2 threads about problems while installing the software. You can find them here (Mac OS X) and here (Windows 8.1).

Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Roel

@Roel and @Jeanne Thanks, for the quick reply, I had been to this site.

Is this the right link to download orca? I cant see any download link there? Have I got the link right?

By the way I am trying to install it on windows 8.1.

Thanks for the help,

Prathima

From the link you provided:
Orca.exe is a database table editor for creating and editing Windows Installer packages and merge modules. The tool provides a graphical interface for validation, highlighting the particular entries where validation errors or warnings occur.

This tool is only available in the Windows SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers. It is provided as an Orca.msi file. After installing the Windows SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers, double click Orca.msi to install the Orca.exe file.

So you clearly need to download and install the Windows SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers.

Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Roel

Just for clarity: I never executed the procedure myself. So I'm (just as you) limited to the information provided by Microsoft on their webpages (and what Google knows )

So you can't locate the setup.msi file of the mock exam software from the Orca application? It's probably on the CD which isn't writable. So I would copy the complete CD to some location on your HD (e.g. C:/KB7) and try it again.

Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Roel

Not Microsoft supported, but SuperOrca seems to be an Orca alternative which can do the job as well (and they provide a manual as well ).

Sorry, My mistake, I was not clear in my previous post.

1>CD ROM from oracle press was giving an error while installing the product
2> When I got http://www.coderanch.com/t/641132/ocajp/certification/Error-installing-Oracle-Press-Java link, I downloaded the orca.exe file.
3>According to the link in 2nd point, "Open the setup.msi file in Orca and under the "Property" table change the value of the "SHAREDADDINFOLDER" to "c:\".
4>I am stuck now in point 3, i.e I cant find setup.msi file in Orca.

I do understand that, you are new to this process just like me. It would be great if you can help, I respect your posts and your nature of extending help to our (people like me) reach, which have helped me in the past, every time I encountered the problem, and posted them in this forum.

I hope above description of my problem is much clear than my previous post.

With great respect,
Prathima

So you have opened the Orca application (by double clicking orca.exe) and when you go to the File menu and click Open, you can't find the setup.msi file you used when trying to install the oracle press product?

Did you already copy the complete CD to a directory on your hard disk (e.g. C:\KB7)?

Hi, Roel, Thanks for the support,

1> When I opened orca.exe it started installation, the orca.exe was in different folder, c:\programfiles\microsoft\windows\orca.exe

2> When it get installed it is in different forlder c:\programfiles(x86)\Orca

3> with in this folder 8 files, namely : darice.cub, logo.cub, mergemod.cub, prca.chm, orca.dat, orca.exe, Vastalogo. cub, xplogo.cub. I cant find setup.msi here.

4> I have copied the CD to my hard disk, c:\OCAJP after seeing your last post. I have 11 files in this folder now
Adobe AIR folder, BonusContent folder, .airinstall.cfg, AUTORUN.INF, Installer.exe, JavaExams.air, Readme.pdf, setup.msi, setup.swf, styleNative.swf.

5> I tried opening setup.msi file in c:\OCAJP folder using Orca software, in that, property table I can see "SHAREDADDINFOLDER" property, whose value is now "computed", but its a readonly field and I am unable to change it (I wish I could have sent screen shot but I dont know how to do it. )

How should I go from here?

With great respect,
Prathima

Hi @Roel, I tried with superOrca, in microsoft orca it says readonly field and does not allow even to change the field. In superOrca a value change popup box appears, but when try to change the value and then press ok, it gives following error message.

"ERROR

C:\Program Files\OCAJP\setup.msi

Access denied!"

When I try to run this file through superOrca it says "can not access network location (Computed)" I think this value (Computed) is the value of "SHAREDADDINFOLDER's" value which I am unable to change.

Do you have admin rights to your computer?

I think you have to run SuperOrca with administrator rights (like Jeanne suggested as well). That could probably be the reason as well why Orca.exe shows all properties as read-only. Because you used a regular user account to run the program, which probably shows all properties read-only. Whereas using an admin account to run the program you'll probably be able to update the properties. Just an assumption as I'm not an Orca.exe whiz kid

If you don't have admin rights on your computer, you should copy the entire CD to a location where you can write to (like "My Documents"). Now it's in "Program Files" and that's mostly a protected location where you can only write to if you have admin rights.

I am not sure whether this is what admin rights means, I tried opening superOrca in startup menu by right clicking on it and chose run as administrator option, then moved the content of CD-ROM to documents folder, and tried changing the value of the "SHAREDADDINFOLDER" field, this is what the error is:

ERROR

C:\Users\Prathima\Documents\OCAJP\setup.msi

Access denied!!!

I still have the old folder, in ProgramFiles directory. I tried running SuperOrca, with run as administrator option and opened old file to change the values then, it has the same error message.
with 2nd line being c:\ProgramFiles\OCAJP\setup.msi

My journey in installation of the CD from K&B book:

From the above posts:

Initial problems occurred in the process of installation, and steps taken to solve has been mentioned in the discussion of this post. Which I will briefly mention them here.

1> When I try to run setup file from CD given in the book I got the error
"The application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged. Try obtaining a new installer file from the application author".

2>After posting it to this forum I knew I have to download superOrca, which can be done through this link:SuperOrca

3>As a very new user of SuperOrca I dint know, what is it for? How will it help me in this situation.

The answer is : It is a database table editor for creating and editing Windows Installer packages and merge modules. The tool provides a graphical interface for validation, highlighting the particular entries where validation errors or warnings occur.

4>In order to use superOrca, Open it by right clicking on it and choose “Run as administrator” option.

5>Follow these steps:

a> open setup.msi file through the menu file/open
b> select property at the left
c> select the row with the property “SHAREDADDINFOLDER”, with initial value “(computed)”
d> doubleclcik on this row
e> change value to c:\
f> save the file again using menu file/save

6>It may be only in my computer, I was not able to change the value, It was showing the error,
“ERROR
C:\Users\Prathima\Documents\OCAJP\setup.msi
Access denied!!!”

7>I shared my setup.exe file from CD with Roel, the javarancher. He changed the values in setupfile, and sent back the new modified file, which I used for the setup. Things that I learnt here are:
a> You can use PM(Purple Moose) in javarach for your personal messages.

b> You can share the files through, wetransfer.com (it's free for files up to 2gb). Here you use your won id(from & to) for the file transfer, with in few minuets, you will get a email providing the link for your file, send this link to the person via PM, he/she can access the file, using the link, without knowing any of your personal id.

c>I dint know how to use screen shots, later I found the answer:

"To take a screenshot and save it as a file. Press the Windows logo key +PrtScn. Or, if you're using a tablet, press the Windows logo button + the volume down button. The screen will dim for a moment when the screen is copied and saved as a file in the Screenshots folder (which is in your Pictures folder)".

I may be new to this, many of you might know this before. I am adding this here, just to show you the things that I learnt, in the journey.

d>As soon as I tried to run the modified file from Roel, I got this error:

“Windows SmartScreen Prevented An Unrecognized App From Running. Running This App Might Put Your PC At Risk”

I fixed it using this link.

8>After running the modified setup file provided by Roel, which ran hardly for few seconds I couldn't see any icons for the question bank.

9>Which might be because, I dint have adobe air(or updated version). I fixed this by downloading it here.

10>Lastly I ran the setupfile from the CD, I think at this point modified setup file has already created the account for me so, the setupfile from CD did its job!!!

Note: These steps were followed in windows-8 platform.

Finally, WE were successful , All thanks to Roel, all the steps mentioned above were his instructions that I just followed like a cub following parent Tiger!!!

Apart from posting the problem in this forum, I also had registered the complaint in their official site, of course its being a Christmas time, the reply I got from them was 6 days after the registration of complaint, by the time I had the answer.

Hi Prathima,

Thanks for such a detailed step-by-step procedure with so much valuable information. Have a well-deserved cow!

Prathima gaitonde wrote:I may be new to this, many of you might know this before. I am adding this here, just to show you the things that I learnt, in the journey.

Glad to hear you learnt a bunch from your journey. That's what getting certified is all about. Not only getting the (paper) certificate, but also becoming a better developer (e.g. improve your skills) with a solid understanding of the Java language.

Prathima gaitonde wrote:All thanks to Roel, all the steps mentioned above were his instructions that I just followed like a cub following parent Tiger!!!

Honestly I have to say my instructions were just a shot in the dark, but I'm very pleased to hear they were helpful and finally let you install the software!

Roel De Nijs wrote:So you clearly need to download and install the Windows SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers.

For those who want to prefer using Microsoft's Orca, you can download it here without having to install the complete Windows SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers. Although I don't think there is any reason to do so, SuperOrca does a great job, is easy to install and very intuitive to use.

Kind regards,
Roel
