Happy New Year!

I am currently a Junior back-end Java developer in a large finance company. And I want to make a decision that should I begin to learn Android seriously. I know where and how to start.

But I want to hear more about why people want to learn Android. As you know, the learning process will take a lot of time for everyone if you want to learn it seriously.

I want to learn Android because I believe that application is the future for the IT Industry, and Android is based on Java (I don't choose IOS). I want to build my own apps in future.

However, for my future career, I plan to work in a large IT company as a back-end Java developer. I don't want to be a mobile developer. Then it seems that building an Android app is a kind of hobby.

I know some senior Java developers with more than 10 years experience also start to learn Android, and it seems they can't use it in their current real work.

So, Could somebody share some reasons, why you want to learn Android, but your current real work is not about Android?

this kind of question in this board may be stupid...

Happy New Year all Coderanchers,
I am pretending Java Developer & done few projects with help of Forums.
Now from Aug-14, i am learning Android Development. Previously i thought as i write Java program same thing i will do.
But when i got Raspberry pi, & Wandboard, i learnt how Andorid OS works, How kernel works, how embedded things works together etc.
Now i write shell script & c programs, Kernel device driver editing etc but still not know why i like all this things instead of sticking Java only.
I am happy to find some unknown things in technology which used Java.
I dont know my future but defiantly i know that , time spent in Learning Android will not waste.
Still there is lots of things remain to learn in Java & Android also.

Happy New year to you too.
Why i learned(and still learning) Android because i believe mobile devices will be future.

When IP addresses change to IPv6 every single device on this planet will be capable of connect Internet aw well as each other.
So, imagine this. You are in the office and you can check your fridge to find out what you need, or start air-conditioner, turn on hot water, fill bathtub.... Some of these wad already done but seriously future is mobile device and mobile devices' future is Android (i don't need to mention iCrap).

That is the main reason why i am learning Java and also Android.
