Hello guys!

I have a friend who is interested to try the Java 8 certifications but he is not sure what book should he try. Every book is special is its own way. What's special about yours? Can you name 3 strong points?

Thank you,
Silviu

Well, an easy one is that we cover the new Java 8 material in detail. Most of the main publishers have not released their Java 8 OCA certification book yet. We also provide a large bank of online review and practice exam questions, which as I mentioned in another post are slightly harder than real exam questions in order to better prepare you for the real exam. Overall, we focussed on providing you with a strong foundation that builds up to the objectives and thorouhgly prepares you for what you will need to know for the exam.

If your friend is somewhat new to Java, we start from scratch and gradually lead up to each topic. If he's experienced, he might be able to skip the introductory material and dive right into the more detailed or new topics. Overall, we tried to keep the book fun and interesting, even if the objectives were a bit dry at times (I'm looking at you operator precedence!)

Hi Boyarsky / Selikoff,

Though this book is for Java 8, does it covers the features that was introduced in Java 7 or only the new features of Java 8 ?
Does Java 8 exam covers Java 7 features too ?

I am planning to upgrade myself from Java 5 to Java 8, so I am looking for the book that covers features across Java 6/7/8.

Regards
Vijay

It should cover Java 7 as well because Java 8 is Java 7 + date/time & lambda(mostly).

The exam is cumulative so features like project coin are covered.

If you are planning to take the OCA 8, this book is a good fit. If you are planning on taking the Java 8 upgrade exam, you'll need a different book. The upgrade exam covers advanced topics like NIO.2 that are in an OCP book and not an OCA book. Also, the upgrade exam covers more of Java 8 than is on the OCA. For the upgrade exam, I recommend using K&B 7 (for the Java 7 topics) and supplement it with "Java 8 for the Really Impatient" for the Java 8 parts.

Neat! Instead of having the practice exam questions in the book or on a CD, they now will be in the cloud

Wondering if this question bank will be subject to regular updates when needed? For example if a typo/mistake is filed against one of the questions. Or will new questions be added when Oracle has changed (one of) the exam objectives.

Thank you for reviewing our questions, Jeanne & Scott. Which audiences will read your book, get the most out of it, and successfully pass the Oracle OCAJP exam? Are there topics, beyond the basic familiarity with the object oriented paradigm and experiencing programing with those languages that implement that paradigm, that'll allow readers to understand and practice those key Java 8 concepts? I've a SCJD 1.4 certification and programing (on and off) for the last 14 years.

The target audience of the book is anybody who want to pass the OCAJP8 certification, no matter how experienced you are in Java. So both a greenhorn as a seasoned Java developer will successfully pass the OCAJP8 exam (although the 1st one probably needs to make a greater effort). It's not a study guide which will learn you all aspects of the Java language, but it covers all exam objectives you need to know to pass the OCAJP8 exam. Sounds almost like a sales representative, but I am not

Question bank will have frequent updates. More info in this post.

Scott said it has the ABILITY for frequent updates. Not that there will be. First of all, I hope there aren't frequent updates because I hope there aren't lots of typos and changes to the exam objectives. Secondly, the publisher hasn't committed to any sort of update schedule. The software is brand new though. We are one of the first books on it. So I don't know if the publisher even knows themselves yet about an update process.

I meant the software the publisher used for the testing material website is new, so I wouldn't be surprised if they rolled out some software updates this year. For errata, it's not clear how often they will update it (since we haven't found any errors online yet) although when it's updated it'll be updated for everyone.
