Websockets as protocol for web services?

I'd love to read your opinions about using websockets as protocol for web services, or, in general, for client-server communication. The most intriguing fact about websockets - in my deep ignorance of course - is that with websocket one may avoid (or reduce) a quite good part of overhead of http-based communication: a direct and persistent connection that seems promising.

Note that SOAP is a messaging protocol and does not care how the messages get passed around.

REST on the other hand relies on the HTTP methods - I dunno how you would handle that in websockets.
