If you look at Oracle's overview of all the Professional level certification of the Java SE, OCPJP8 is already mentioned.

But if you click on the 1Z0-809 exam link you'll get an almost empty page. If you then click on the Click to see more exam details link, you'll get an error: The exam is either retired or invalid.

A little inconsistency on Oracle's website which maybe reveals the imminent release of the OCPJP8 beta.

Progress. They removed the Java 5 language from the 809 details page. Now it is a blank page ready for data. (Nope. still says retired in popup. Now I'm not positive I saw Java 5 there last night)

Even more interesting, there is no mention of IZ0-809 on the new & upcoming exams page. If they are planning to release it soon why don't they put it on the upcoming list?

Mark,
That actually makes sense. That page is the for beta and released exams. This exam isn't yet in beta. I can understand why Oracle would wait until the beta objectives are ready before putting it on the beta page.

There is a section for upcoming beta exams, says there are no upcoming beta exams.

As near as I can tell, Oracle defines "upcoming" as ready with objectives announced but not available to actually take yet.

When the Java 8 Upgrade exam was announced, it showed up with the objectives the first time it was on that page.

The exam objectives of Java SE 8 Programmer II Exam has been updated.

I have made a comparison excel for the OCJP 7 and 8 exam objectives, the main objectives are seems to change this way:

Removed:
Object-Oriented Design Principles
String Processing

Added:
Lambda Built-in Functional Interfaces
Java Stream API
Use Java SE 8 Date/Time API

Merged:
Java Concurrency (Threads & Concurrency)

Matching objectives also have differences, and should be compared in more detail, but the Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates books seems to cover the most of them.

Could anyone recommend sources for the new, Java 8 specific objectives? Articles, books, anything appropriate is appreciated!

Feel free to update the excel too with useful information.

I like "Java 8 for the Really Impatient" for coverage of lambdas/streams.

I'm surprised they put JavaScript/Nashorn on the Java 8 upgrade exam and not on the OCP 8.

Strange indeed! Maybe they just want to make life of study guide authors a little harder to publish a study guide covering both the OCPJP8 exam and the OCPJP8 upgrade exam A seperate chapter about JavaScript/Nashorn and mention it's only required for the OCPJP8 upgrade exam. If the study guide provides mock exams as well, one has to create a few JavaScript/Nashorn questions, and clearly mark these questions as "only for OCPJP8 upgrade exam aspirants".

Also removed is some of the objectives for NIO, JDBC and localization. And JavaScript/Nashorn is on the Java 8 upgrade exam, but not the OCP 8.

I did a detailed mapping (by objective #) on this site's wiki (like I did for the OCA and the Java 7 exam.) It's also editable by anyone who has an account here.

Under the Java Stream API section there is an objective: Use of () and flatMap() methods of the Stream API.

The first () is an accidentally missed function name, or the no argument operator of a lambda expression? The oracle exam page also has it the same way.

That's because I copy/pasted the objectives from Oracle, typos and all . I think they mean merge() and flatMap() because the upgrade exam lists those in the same objective.

I found a few other typos that I reported to Oracle as well. When I ddi that for the OCA exam, they did fix them. Albeit slowly.

Oracle fixed this objective. It is the merge() method as I suspected. I've fixed the wiki page here as well since it is now fixed on Oracle's site.

If anyone took OCAJP 8 exam, check your email!
Oracle sent an email with a possibility to get a free exam voucher for Java SE 8 Programmer II beta exam.
Nice one, Oracle!

Victor,
The beta originally had an end date of the end of this month and (very) recently got extended to June 13th. It's possible the testing centers don't know about it yet.

Hmm makes sense! I will try to contact the nearest one and confirm this situation or at least try to speed things up

Ill keep informing

UPDATE:

As Jeanne mentioned, since the date changed recently the tests centers were unaware or updateing the schedules (at least here in Brazil). Today i rescheduled my exam to the desired date

Now it's time to study hahahah

Can I expect that a newer version of the java exam does not included questions from topics not listed that were in the previous version?

Welcome to CodeRanch Diego.

There will most likely be some questions from previous versions of Java, however some topics are being phased out with the newest version of Java (Java 10) such as the use of the finalize method.
Also, some topics like the Date and Time API are more emphasized then the older methods.

There are a number of Java 8 certification study guides out there which cover a majority of topics in the exams. At this point in time there is no certifications for Java newer then Java 8.
Oracle, has not mentioned anything regarding Java certification for newer versions of Java.

Thank you for your response,

I wanted to know this because I was practicing with some questions on Whizlab but they include questions about RowSet and Transactions on the JDBC section, so I was kind of surprised since reading material of the ocpjp 8 exam does not explain these topics, should I study this from ocpjp 7 material or it is safe to ignore these questions?

Sierra Bates and Robson don't mention row sets and transactions on page 813, only result sets. Go through the list of objectives on the Oracle website and check carefully.
If you are going to do any database programming you will need to know about row sets and transactions (the latter particularly) so always think, “What can I learn?” rather than, “What can I ignore?”

Diego: Rowsets and transactions were both removed from the exam and not in the OCP 8.

Campbell: For most topics, that would be good advice. For JDBC, the OCP covers an "interesting" mix of topics. (I whine about this in the book.) In particular, they cover things that are bad practice or very rare in real life. Like not using datasources and prepared statements.
