Welcome to the Ranch.

How exactly do you want to convert an image file to text? Are you talking about optical character recognition - you have an image containing letters, and you want to recognize the letters? That's not an easy task that can be done with a short program...

You should explain what you mean when you say that the TIFF file "contains strings". In what way does it contain those strings?

If you mean it's like a tiff of a page of text, like a photo of text, you may be able to convert it to pdf and then use ocr on the pdf to extract the text. There are ocr websites were you can upload short pdfs and then download it in searchable text pdf form

If this is the kind of thing you want to do, but you have to develop an algorithm to do it, then you will have to write or otherwise obtain some sort of ocr code to run on the tiff
