Android Studio is set up and apparently working on my PC after I followed the directions for the dust Android app tutorial on the Google developers website. Trouble is, it's Windows 8 so nearly impossible to navigate around or find stuff. I also hadn't learned Java yet, so after some floundering I picked up a Java textbook. Now I just want to do the basic exercises in Notepad++ and run them from the command prompt. Do all the java installations as part of the android studio setup process cover that or are there extra steps. If so, how do I do that without getting it mixed up with the android bits? Like ending up with duplicates and drilling down into the wrong directory?

Hi Susan,

Welcome to the Ranch!

I suggest you set up a separate area where you can go through the book's exercises independently of what you do in Android Studio. It'll be best if you create a directory that is outside of the Android Studio workspace and do your experimentation work in there. Are you familiar with doing things from the command prompt?
