I have a classroom work in Photoshop, in design,illustrator web page design and now attempting to learn programming what is the best way to approach HTML and JavaScript for a total greenhorn?

I recommend A Smarter Way to Learn JavaScript. They key feature of this e-book is that it goes with a website by the same name. You can try out the website for free to see if you like it. It stresses repetition and interactivity to really get you to understand/remember what you learn.
