I am writing an utility application. In which i want to send a directory's information (like its attributes e.g. name of files/folders, type, last modified time, their size etc.)from one system to another. Sending and Receiving Systems could have different platforms (one can have Windows other can have Mac). Please suggest me the best way i could do it.

I thought, i could do it using File class but it didn't work as File class object delegates the calls to underlying platform's file system for getting the attributes. And we know different platforms have their own implementation of directory structure.

To be more specific i want something like what we do in windows as following.
