I am trying to learn the basics of ORM with JPA, and as always I want to learn it using a text editor so I can actually understand how all the pieces fit together, rather than relying on the IDE to do the leg work. However, all the examples I have found use either Eclipse or NetBeans, where creating the DB connection and persistence.xml file is done automatically, adding the server driver, JPA provider and putting files in the correct location, etc, is all just a couple of easy clicks away. And then there are the tutorials that use Maven; whilst undoubtedly very useful it doesn't help me to understand the dependencies. I'd like to understand what is going on in the background. Can anyone point me in the right direction of a non-IDE tutorial or provide some explanation to help me on my way?

My bad, I'll go back to the JDBC Database Access and Introduction to the Java Persistence API tutorials.

Sure you really need this ? An IDE helps a lot to hide boring details - as handling XML configuration stuff for example - and let you to be focused on your business logic. Just because they're doing the "leg work", I think that it isn't really a high added value work.
I will let Eclipse or NetBeans to configurate correctly XML, drivers and so on and trying to understand how I can modify programmatically such values, or how to select a EntityManager programmatically via lookup.
Of course, mine is a simple opinion.
