Hi, I am looking to get into learning JavaScript fundamentals over the spring and summer. I have some experience with HTML and CSS and have just finished the first year of my computing course. I have only had a very small introduction to logic based programming such as Java and JavaScript and found that I was struggling with the concepts of this kind of programming. I feel that I need to go back to the beginning and start again as the introduction I had seemed very intermediate so a struggle.
If anyone can recommend a good approach to JavaScript as I am on a web development course, that would be great. Now that I am in between years I could work on this every day. My only worry is what order to learn it all, and how to put it together into something meaningful and fun. I have heard people mention Code-academy as good but also heard that after doing tracks there, they don't learn whats needed to have the confidence to create their own projects. I definitely want to learn by doing and create stuff on the way, however I still need to understand the basic concepts as well. It does seem very confusing and daunting to me at the moment.
I also wanted to start participating in a forum that welcomes beginners. Coderanch looks a great forum. I did try and post on Stack Overflow as well but they don't seen very welcoming to newbies and newbie questions, as they delete them as off topic.
I hope you guys can help me get off to a good start
Thanks
Rob

Welcome to the Ranch!

You might want to check out Head First JavaScript Programming, it doesn't assume a strong programming background. Be sure to get the 2014 edition.

And then we all jump out and yell "surprise! we got you this tiny ad!"
