Hello ranchers

Say I have a intercepting filter to ensure character encoding or other purposes and a front controller servlet, what should this filter component connected to?

Cos I got this filter dangling with nothing connected to it. Is this normal or should it be connected to client JSP and/or front controller.

My understanding is that client (JSP) goes to the filter then to the front controller
bunch of JSP ---<<use>>--- filter then filter ---<<use>>--- front controller

Is this correct?

If I set it up like above, would the class diagram need to look the same?

Hi K. Tsang,

I would definitely include the intercepting filter in class diagram and component diagram. I think I would combine front controller servlet and intercepting filter in the single component, naming it "front controller" and adding appropriate note to the diagram.
Not 100% sure, but I would probably not include interactions with intercepting filter in sequence diagram. We discussed pros and cons of using of interceptors in sequence diagrams in this thread.

Thanks Mike

Your suggestion combining the filter and front controller sound legit, making it simpler
