Hi everyone!

Maybe it's a wrong place to post it bun not been able to find a better place for it. Just wanted to introduce myself as we'll be spending some time together and I find it only polite to say 'hi'. So... Hi :-)
I'm new to Java (as you can guess) and have a very ambitious goal to turn into a pro in a reasonably short time. By January next year I would like to take Sun cert (first). I think it's doable as I've done some (lame, but always some) programming before. Not to bore you too much I'll finish saying that I hope to learn a great deal from you guys. :-)

Cheerio!

Welcome to the ranch!

With dedication, I'm sure you'll be able to reach your target. One thing I've noticed is very educational, is looking at the questions on these boards, and picking some in areas you're not experienced in. Then find out how to work out the problem, and guide the people here along the way!

Thanks everyone!
I will certainly do as you say. Been bit busy with the theory, but now time for practice so I will definitely have a lot of questions. ;-)

Welcome to Javaranch! I'm sure you would have an exciting time reading through the posts in the fiorum! In fact, I supplemented my knowledge by going through the posts and the answers the users posted! That should help you acheive your goal in addition to the effort that you might be putting! But whatever it is, try focussing on one thing at a time. Be it a technology or a framework, try nailing the basic ideas down and then proceed with the next thing.

I think each and every individual that wishes to be a pro should define what pro means to them then set that goal and a reasonable timeline to reach it. A wise professional doesn't know all of the answers but knows, quickly, how to find the best answer. At the end of Herbert Schildt's book he congratulates the reader and offers the reader the right to call themselves a Java programmer at that point. I'm taking my time to work through this book and although I may be considered a programmer I wouldn't consider myself a pro. I would loosely define pro as someone who has several years of experience under their belt. But to each his own, you may have the capacity to soak in information at a much greater rate than others and can accomplish this challenge and I applaud you for that. From someone whose got a few years of experience in IT, not as a programmer, I'd suggest that in your pursuit of knowledge don't leave wisdom behind. And I only say this because it seems to be a serious problem we are facing these days. Good luck
