Hi,
I've got 15 years experience developing web based Java business applications and I'd really like to try something fun like an animated game or a practical application with a non-form based interface. I have yet to find instruction on making that happen. I've looked at the table of contents of the new "Head First Android" and it doesn't seem to be there either though it's hard to tell.

Does anyone with significant game/interface experience use the Android SDK as is, or is it necessary to go to flash or some other package to make it come together. Where does one find hello world examples of animated UI? Thanks!

You would require to understand some basics to get going in android development and interface design.
You can certainly design ui and games using android only. You would not require flash.
You can certainly make basic app using android studio. Go to developer.android.com.
