I understand the general philosophy behind these books, but what makes the content of "Head First Android" different than other Android books?

I remember those old days where I started to learn about web application development. I have read through many books and none of those books that I read instilled that basic knowledge about web programming using JSP & Servlets until I picked up the Head First Servlets & JSP. I would equate Head First == Basics First. As soon as you grasp the fundamental basics, you are good to go!

Hi J,

It's not so much the content as the approach. In the Head First Series we concentrate a *lot* on the "why" as well as the "what" of learning. This means we'll typically lead with a problem (the motivation) and then show how a particular feature solves that problem. This means that not only will the book be more interesting, but if you come across a similar problem in Real Life(tm) you'll remember the solution.

Because they do it differently They not only give you ample/appropriate examples but also carve it in your head (okay, not carve but at least make a mark) . The explanation is such that it is intuitive (the storytelling strategy, Instead of saying 'Let's try making an app for ordering Beer", they say "You are approached by 'Amazing Beers' to design an app for them...") ,easy to grasp and is retained in your head compared to plain examples. In fact Headfirst books even have a section in the book explaining why and how the book is designed the way it is.

I haven't worked much in web applications but I am still a confident web app developer because God, the most gracious, made me to read Head First JSP and Servlets.

I am intrigued! I've been a loyalist of a different publisher for many years. Perhaps it is time for me to look at things a little bit differently.
Thanks, everyone!
