hello everyone..!!! I am new here....I just completed my OCA syllabus...I attempted the OCA test 1 provided by the K&B study guide in their e-content cd.....I got 40% only...I am a bit depressed. I want to ask
Does this happens with almost everyone in their first sample test or i need to study more..?? or my score will improve after a few mock tests..
One more important thing i would like to ask that everyone keeps talking about the ethnuware test...!! I am not able to buy it..!! I cant afford it..Is there any way i can get the ethnuware test questions for free???

Hi Aditya Desai,

First of all, a warm welcome to CodeRanch!

Don't be depressed at all! The OCA certification exams are really tough! To pass these exams, you'll need a very solid knowledgde about Java and OO basics.

You are definitely not the only one who failed a mock exam. Some people even fail at the actual exam. Just like I said: the actual exam is hard and to be well prepared for the actual exam, the mock exams have to be as hard as the actual exam (and sometimes maybe even harder).

If you only score 40% on the mock exam, you definitely have to study harder. Taking some more mock exams will not improve your score, because you cdon't have the required knowledge to pass a mock exam. Therefore you need to put some extra effort in your preparation. If you only have read the syllabus and have finished the self test questions and then took the OCA mock exam, you didn't write any Java code at all. And learning a programming language is like driving a car: you don't learn to drive a car by just reading a book, you need to get your hands dirty and write code, lots of code!
When you use the search function on this forum, you'll find plenty of topics about people asking for advice because they failed mock (and/or actual) exams (e.g. here, here and here). These topics definitely contain very useful information so read them carefully.

Enthuware mock exams are priced very cheaply (only 10 USD) and offer excellent value for money. I don't think it's possible to get them for free. I think one of the main reasons these prices are so low is to allow everyone to benefit from these mock exams.

Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Roel

Thanks a lot Roel for replyng..!!!
Yes you are absolutely correct I didnt write any code at all...!!!
Actually this may be a dumb question but practicing all the examples in the K&B book is sufficient or something more is required..!!!??
If something more is required then what it is??

Plenty of possibilities: have a look here and here. And preferably you write these little programs without an IDE, just use your favourite text editor and javac/java. Here you'll find some opinions about both approaches.

Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Roel

I started with 40% or so on tests and a year later get about 80% on any new quiz I find including Enthuware. The improvement was about half concentrating on the unrealistic stuff the real test emphasizes that's reflected in the mocks, and about half learning to read the questions carefully! If you actually can't afford the $10, and many people in the world couldn't, I helped Enthuware a little with their analytics, for fun, so theoretically they kind of owe me, and so theoretically I urge them to pass a free copy on to you, if Paul reads this. A lot of people just want something for free. But I was taught to never call something cheap, because cheap is relative!

Definitely true! But compared to the price of study guides and the certification exam itself, and with regard to the excellent quality of these mock exams, it's cheap. I think Enthuware could easily charge 3-4x the current price.

Sure. At least 3-4x. But I have often done things equivalent to find a free book, then luck into a free pathway to the test, but just needed to luck onto free test preparation I have been wealthy at times but at other times had nothing

Guessing from the name of the OP, he is from India and the price in India after conversion is about INR650, which is quite low even from Indian standards. A dinner for two in an everyday joint will cost about the same if not more
Even so, you are right Guillermo. You did give valuable feedback to us. As a token of our appreciation for your help, I will offer 50% discount to OP on your account Sound good?

Sounds like the winning move, even if you do have to eat dinner alone one night

Thanks..Yes I am from India...And i know the price of test in India is not very high...
Actually the thing is my parents wont lend me that money for any test(guess they dont know the value of it)...
Another reason is that the exam price is very high ....so i cant further ask them to lend me money on this....
But still I'll try to make an arrangement....my friend might help me in it .....

Make sure you get the Enthu to practice with, one way or another. Honestly I can't imagine anyone passing the test without it. At least if they haven't taken this kind of test before. It helps you with specific odd (to my way of thinking) things that are covered on the test and the style those things are presented in.

I don't want to brag but I passed all certification exams I took without Enthuware, thus also my very first certification (SCJP 1.4). And I passed each of them on 1st attempt. And I'm definitely not the only one.

Same here. I think it's possible to pass the test without any cert specific study materials. However, it would be very time consuming. Books and Enthuware save you time so you learn and practice the right things.

People who had to struggle to reach the same level are better teachers than child prodigies ;)
