Hello all, this is my first post here and I am very, very inexperienced with coding, so some help would be amazing! I am reading headfirst java and it says to "Add an entry to your path environment variable that points to the /bin directory inside the main Java directory. What on earth does this mean, and how do I go about doing it? Also I'm on Mac if it makes a difference, Thank You!

Welcome to the Ranch.

You may not need to do anything if Java is already installed.

Open a Terminal instance and type javac -version and hit the enter key.

What happens?

The Terminal app is in Applications/Utilities. It gives you access to a bash shell command line.

If you are going to be programming, you need to become familiar with the command line.

Oh, I've got you. When I typed that in I received "javac 1.8.0_51"

Then you are all set -- no jiggering with the path required; the installation took care of it for you.

P.S. That means you are running Java 8, in case you need that info.

Welcome again

It also means your computer has been updated; the update 51 version was only issued last week.
