This doesn't look like a Swing question to me -- you don't need a GUI or even any user interaction at all to upload a file. That's assuming you're using the regular meaning of "upload", anyway. Perhaps you could explain a bit more, including what a "java workspace" is and what communication protocol you are trying to use to connect to it? A bit of code wouldn't hurt either.
