I graduated a year back and was working in C# mostly. I have worked in Java previously(about a year) and wish to go back to working in Java. I want to appear for the certification exams within the next 2 months. Which certification OCAJP 7+ OCPJP 7 or OCAJP 8+ OCPJP 8 should I opt for?

Also is 1-2 month timeframe enough for the preparation?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Aditi Deshpande,

First of all, a warm welcome to CodeRanch!

That's a very wise decision

It all depends on your preferences regarding preparation. The OCAJP8 and OCPJP8 certification exams are pretty recent, so resources to study and prepare are very limited. For the OCAJP8 you'll have a few study guides, but the OCPJP8 is really very recent so currently there's no study guide available at the market. Because the OCAJP7 and OCPJP7 certification exams exist a lot longer, you'll have a few study guides to choose from. And you can't combine different version certifications, so if you opt for OCAJP7 you'll have to take OCPJP7 as well.
If you are happy to use an OCPJP7 study guide and study the additional OCPJP8 topics using online resources (e.g. Oracle Java Tutorials), then you should definitely opt for the most recent one. But that's a personal decision. I like having a study guide, so I would prefer the Java 7 certification exams. Or you could start with studying for OCAJP8 (using an appropriate study guide). When you have passed this exam, you start preparing for OCPJP8 using a OCPJP7 study guide, and once an OCPJP8 study guide is released (this one is expected early 2016), buy that one and continue your preparation using that study guide. It's completely up to you!
Here you'll find an up-to-date overview of all available resources for both the OCA exams.

That's again very personal and really depends on your experience, learning speed and the time you can spend each day. But 1-2 months to pass both certifications would be very, very quickly. And I guess it's only possible if you are really experienced or if you can dedicate all your time to studying and preparing both exams. Otherwise it would probably be mission impossible. Most people here need at least 1-2 months to throughly prepare themselves for the OCA exam. And that's the entry-level exam, the OCP exam is much harder (more content, more advanced topics and more in-depth knowledge required).
And I also don't like people rushing into getting certified. The journey becoming certified is much more important than that piece of paper itself. If you take your time to prepare, you'll become a much better developer with a good understanding of Java and OO basics. You'll get much more out of your certification than someone who's preparing to just pass the exam. No doubt! But that's just my personal opinion.

Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Roel

The OCP 8 exam exam is hard! Going at it without a study guide is going to take a lot more of your time. If your goal is to get certified quickly, I think you should go with the Java 7 certs. I think you can prepare and take the OCA within a month. I think the OCP will take a good while longer to prepare for.

Thank you Roel and Jeanne for your valuable reply!
I think I will heed your advice and probably get the prep material for Java 7 as of now and start preparing. Depending on how my preparation goes and the availability for OCP 8, I will register for OCA 7 or 8.
