Could anyone suggest me a good book that I could use as a reference to build a Linux system from scratch? I want the book to cover everything from compiling the kernel, compiling and installing the packages, having configuration and update management. I'm looking to do this on a Panda board that I would purchase shortly! So please suggest me some good text books!

The Linux from Scratch website has pretty comprehensive documentation. I'd be surprised if you didn't find everything you need on there.

How much are experienced in Linux, Joe? Linux from scratch is not a piece if you don't have a good knowledge about the system.

If you are not considering yourself as an advanced user, it may be worth to try first with something easier, like installing Gentoo from Stage 3 tarball. Gentoo has an excellent handbook that makes the entire process easier and less confusing. They offer also Stage 2 and Stage 1 tarballs if you want to try something harder.

Also probably it is worth to get book "UNIX IN A NUTSHELL", it is a good referrence book. Also, once you in Linux, use command "man [package]/[command]" man stands for manual, so you'd see existing options for particular command or package and similar. Start by typing "man man" and read about it.

Wait a week. O'Reilly sometimes offer all their eBooks at half price for 24 hours at Hallowe'en.

There is also Linux in a Nutshell.
