Hi,
I want to learn EJB2 (for a project that does not use EJB3) and am reading Enterprise javabeans for dummies.
I am trying to install the tools to run the code on any linux distribution in virtualbox.

Can someone point me to a combination of JDK+JBoss +IDE that works?

I have tried CentOS5 and a bunch of JDKs and JBoss versions but there is always a problem that
stops me.

Thanks for any pointer!

I would try with Eclipse + Wildfly + JDK 7.0.
And welcome to the Ranch !

Welcome to the Ranch A Bo

If you want to learn EJB2 go with the book Head First EJB which covers EJB2.x

J2EE 1.4 is still EJB2. Java EE 5+ is EJB3

Not sure about JBoss maybe v5.x or older.

JBoss EAP 6 still supports EJB2, besides the obvious EJB3.
