Can someone let me know what I can do to fix the error:

Are you sure the .class file of your program is in the CLASSPATH and that the class has a main method?

I think so, The file works for me, but when my friend tries it, it does not work.

Note that since you have a package statement in the source code, the source file needs to be in a directory with the name payroll. Then the directory containing payroll must be in the CLASSPATH, and you execute the program
with the command java payroll.Payroll

Taht is correct. Also when you use the ls command (*nix) or dir (Windows) you should see the payroll directory as being an element in your current directory.
