Thank you Maneesh. I had just polished off a bowl of paneer peas for lunch, so I guess I'm prepped for the mood. I like the way the cheese squeaks in my mouth.

Wishing you and yours a bright year to come!

Yum! It's been really cold and rainy all day today in Bangalore. I could do with a bowl of spicy paneer right now.
I had heard curry's popular in the UK. I had no idea it had gone across the pond too.

Chicken Tikka Masal is practically England's national dish these days.

Unlike the UK, where a lot of Indian cuisine got brought back during the Raj, the USA had to wait for the H1-B influx, but now even my little backwater city is well-supplied with Indian restaurants and grocery stores. Plus I got given an Indian cookbook for Xmas several years back and it complements my garden, which is mostly stuff like basil (grows sweeter) and peppers (grow hotter). The St. Augustine datil pepper has a certain reputation for fire, although not to the degree that ghost peppers do. I've also got a prolific lime tree, so lime pickle is a good way to preserve the fruit. I use lime juice to curdle my homemade paneer.

At the moment, we're anything but cold and rainy here, though. Temps for the last 2 weeks have been running around 90F/32C with high humidity and I, for one am sick of it. We should be seeing temps about 20F cooler than that at this time of year. It's been a LOOONNNGG Summer.

Happy Diwali. That is a pretty picture even if it isn't one you took personally.

For all thos who are critiquing my artistic and photographic skills

Short version: Yeah I pinched it! I am too lazy

Long version: I am no Rangoli artist nor photographer. I chose the picture because I liked a lot the way the conch shell has been drawn. In Indian culture the conch shell is blown during Pooja (akin to ringing the temple bells) Interestingly, in ancient times, it was blown to signal the start and end of battles during a day (No fighting allowed before or after sunset) Also if you notice the lower end of the conch shell, it is shaped like an elephant trunk, symbolising Ganpati, the god of wisdom.

@Tim In case Indian cuisine intrests you, check out http://beyondtastebuds.blogspot.in

Thanks Manish!

Speaking of festivals, my wife is a fruitcake fan. When I decided to make one for her last year's holiday season I went on the Internet. Most of the good recipes were on Indian sites, including the one I ended up using.

So if England got the tikka masala, it appears India got English fruitcake!

Happy diwali to all Ranchers. In Mumbai we had a pretty noise free diwali in our building. Loved it.

Talking of food, my colleague got an H1-B and leaving for NY on saturday.
It was a long discussion about which are the spices and utensils that he will carry with him.
