I would suggest using the classes in the java.io package

Specify your File.
Open a FileInputStream for the file.
The read(byte[] b) method looks appropriate if you only want to read a fixed number of bytes.

Keep in mind that the method may read fewer bytes than you want; it returns the actual number. Both RandomAccessFile and DataInputStream have readFully methods that is guaranteed to read the number of bytes you want (or throw an exception if fewer bytes are available).
