Java SE 5 and 6, Certified Associate 1Z0-850, is this a good idea?

Hi JavaRanch,

I am new to Java and not as strong as I would like to be. I still have to create my first application. I recently got 49% on Java SE 5 and 6, Certified Associate 1Z0-850. I failed that exam but I noticed by browsing JavaRanch that this exam is effectively deprecated.

My question is:

Should I switch gears and study for Java SE 8 Programmer I, 1Z0-808, instead? OR should I reattempt 1Z0-850?

Also, if you are feeling energetic, any thoughts about the following study method?

1. Complete 3-10 problems a day on http://codingbat.com/ OR http://practiceit.cs.washington.edu/
2. Check-in weekly with Kaplan Self-Test and summarize and review incorrectly answered questions.

John,
I think you should switch to the OCA 8. The reason is that the Java 5/6 exams are old and deprecated. And they don't serve as a pre-req to other exams if you decide to take more in the future.

I think you should mix studying for the test with practicing coding on those websites.

Thanks Jeanne,

I'm trying to be unambiguous because I have selected the wrong exam once before. OCA 8 is the exam titled "Java SE 8 Programmer I, 1Z0-808"? Or is it achieved by taking another exam? Also, does the exam have prerequisites?

Thanks for helping this greenhorn!

That's the exam. And no pre-requisites.
