Two books I would NOT recommend, they have mistakes, not well presented and explained:
Schaum's "Programming wih Java"
Sybex's "Java 2 J2SE 1.4"

Try Deitel (deitel.com) books for Java. Their are really good and have real-world examples like projects. They help to learn each topic in Java really fast. For example this one: http://www.deitel.com/Books/Java/JavaHowtoProgram10eEarlyObjects/tabid/3656/Default.aspx
