This is the official thread for the little pies that will soon appear all over the forum.

The idea is that you can get pie in a variety of ways:

- you buy pie
- somebody gives you pie
- you earn enough cows to get pie (try not to think of "cowpie")

Once you have pie, you can currently:

- view and post in the hidden pie forum
- turn off ads
- highlight one thread with a pie (does not cost pie)
- give pie to a good post (costs pie, hightlights the thread with pie, and the author gets pie)
- send pie to others (costs pie)
- have 3 more bumper stickers
- show the pie icon next to your display name
- add more forums to a thread
- ability to add two thumbs up; ability for thumbs down
- private user notes
- extra features you can control from your profile
      - turn off wood
      - hide the site logo
      - larger signature
      - turn off ads
      - show the pie icon next to your display name
      - keep track, thread-by-thread, of what you have and have not yet seen
      - hide your email/PM info

pie features coming soon:

- features to enhance your preferred view of the forums
      - show thread starter in list of threads
      - show last commentor in list of threads
      - modify the "best" or "recent" columns on the home page
      - modify how the "best" algorithm works for you
      - influence the "best" algorithm with posters you like
      - show time in customizable time zone rather than "2 hours ago"
      - show registration date for users under their name instead of as hover text
- ability to show, in a thread, how far you have viewed in the past

This thread is a great place to ask about pie and make suggestions for pie for the future.

Any guidance on how to determine if a good post merits a cow or a slice or pie?

My opinion regarding this. As a moderator, or rancher, you are allocated a number of cows to give per day. And for the most part, I believe that cows are given in a fitting manner.

In terms of pies, however, pies are yours. If you give away a slice of pie, you are giving away your slice of pie. This means that you have less pie. As such, you should be able to do whatever you want with pie.

I think that if a person buys a dozen pies, they can give the pie to whoever they want for any reason that pops into their head.

Here is some more on the cow stuff

I think that I hand out cows when people have been super helpful. Which is pretty much the exact same thing I went by for selecting staff many years ago. And now those people all have the ability to hand out cows too. And they picked more staff based on how helpful they were. And they can hand out cows.

I think the cows are pretty universally handed out for when folks see a really good post.

But I suspect that sometimes somebody writes a really good post, only a person that has the ability to hand out cows doesn't see it. Or sees it and doesn't think to hand out a cow. Or sees it and thinks "well, it is certainly cow worthy, but I only get to give away one per day, and maybe I will see a better one later."

I found in my pie profile preferences this option: " Keep track of threads read on a thread by thread basis ". What does it mean?

A description from Jeanne ...

Jeanne Boyarsky wrote:

  • Thread by thread "read" tracking - this one you have to turn on. Go to "my profile" and site personalization. Then check "Keep track of threads read on a thread by thread basis." Be sure to enter the captcha before saving. Once you do this the light bulb will show for threads you haven't read regardless of whether you went to a new computer or started a new session. You can also mark all threads in a forum or all threads overall as read by a link on the upper right (below the header) of each page. Don't worry. If you like the old way better, you can go into your profile and turn it off at any time.

Is there any merit to give pies to "Staff" or other members who are already super-privileged?
On a personal note, if you were already super-privileged and someone gave you pie anyway, would it make you feel appreciated?

I am just asking because I've got a few good tips here, written in a careful and interesting way and I would like to give something back to the forum, considering that it cannot be Java advice

I think that offering someone a piece of pie is a special token of gratitude. Everyone who is active here is so on a voluntary basis, by cheer altruism because they love helping other people. Whether you are experienced or not, whether you are new to the Ranch or have been active for a decade, it always feels nice to feel appreciated.

Heck, even a thumbs-up makes me feel appreciated so imagine what a slice of pie will do!

In fact, I don't know... I guess that only people who own pie can see this thread?

    Thanks D.J.!

Hmm I think this Wiki page is visible for everybody, but we have a secret PIE forum somewhere that you can now access. Check the forum listing.

You might also want to check your profile settings, there are some PIE only features you can configure there.

Yes, it does make sense. Staff actually do not have the features bestowed by pie, and so can't use some of the features of this site. They're not privileged in that sense.
