I understand that threads are run in a web container’s thread pool and a programmer should not be concerned with thread management when programming the web tier. Is this correct? Apart from certain precautions like avoiding instance variables since they are not thread safe, when programming the web tier (for example via a web tier framework like Spring MVC), should a programmer bother with thread management tools like semaphore, exchanger, phaser, executor etc?

In my almost 20 years of working in the web tier, I've never had a need to give thread management a single thought.

Thread safety, yes, of course.
