Hi all,

I am planning for an OCA exam.

My question: Which version should I choose? In SE 8 there is even a new field, Lamba.

Which arguments can be found for which version?

Thanks. Uwe

Hi Uwe Schneider,

First of all, a warm welcome to CodeRanch!

I think most people will opt for OCA8 at this moment. Simply because it's the latest (and greatest) version of Java.

In the past it was more difficult, because for example there was not yet a study guide for the OCP8 version. So if you passed OCA8 and wanted to take the OCP8 exam as well, you had to buy an OCP7 study guide and look for other books and/or resources to study the additional topics. But that's not an issue anymore. If you can freely choose the version, I would go for OCA8 (and OCP8). Because OCA7 (and OCP7) exist already a few years more than OCA8 (and OCP8), you'll have more study guides for these exams. So that might be the only reason to opt for OCA7.

Here you'll find a mapping between the exam objectives of OCAJP7 and OCAJP8. In the OcajpFaq (besides other very useful information) and this thread you'll find an overview of all available resources (study guides, mock exams,...) to thorougly prepare yourself for the OCA certification exam. And on the OcajpWallOfFame you'll find plenty of (links to) experiences from other ranchers (including resources they have used). So it can be useful to determine which resources are useful (and which are not).

Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Roel
