Not related to the new appearance as such, but:
How about warning (not necessarily preventing) a poster when they attempt to reply to a very old thread?

You would only find old threads by searching, and surely the age of a thread is shown. What is wrong with posting to old threads?

Nothing wrong per se, just a waste of the posters time and waste of readers time if done inadvertently, it resurrects a closed topic and puts it back on top of the Recent Topics list.
You then read through all the posts in that thread and get to the bottom only to find someone is not adding value but has mistakenly replied to an obsolete topic.
There was an example this morning, someone had replied with a solution to a problem raised five years ago, so that topic is now in the recent topics list (the author or a mod has deleted the new post).
Happens now and again. A warning message would alert the poster, that would be a nice friendly feature.

Okay, I split this discussion off from the official look and feel topic (http://www.coderanch.com/t/661625/Ranch-Office/Suggestions-feel-official), as this discussion isn't really related.

In the past, posts were actually moderated when old topics were resurrected. In fact, we even had a FAQ to tell you not to post to old topics (http://www.coderanch.com/t/660215/Wiki/Dont-Wake-Zombies). Of course, if you read that link, you will see that the FAQ doesn't actually say that (at least, not anymore).

It was a very long debate, but in the end, it was felt that the forum topic discussion was very important to not make such a blanket policy. We can still moderate in such cases, but it is for other conditions, such as being off-topic, etc... So... this is why the ranch does not have a policy against posting to old topics. In fact, it is encouraged.

If the new post has been deleted (that quickly), it was very likely to be spam. We try our best to never delete user content.

As for the topic still being in the "Recent Topics List", even though the latest post has been deleted, that is a known bug. Sorry.

I believe that there was a discussion regarding this. It may have actually been implemented -- not sure. Let me ask around for you.

Thanks Henry.

I saw the post that had been added earlier today and it was a genuine reply to the topic, the author (not me btw) evidently had not noticed the age of the thread and had acted in good faith.
Its an easy mistake to make if reading through search results. I just think an alert would prevent that kind of oversight, say if a thread had been inactive for more than a year or so.
But its not a biggie, depends how easy & risk-free it would be to implement.

Please quote the thread which had the post deleted, then we can have a look at it.

Does it matter which thread? I don't wish to start pointing fingers. Its not relevant to my suggestion, that was just one example that I happened to notice today.

As an FYI... It turns out that this feature had been implemented (many years ago). Apparently, it didn't work well, and hence, removed.

In the future, it may be implemented again. However, since the Ranch no longer discourages posting to very old topics, I am not sure if it will be a good idea to wait for it...

Hope this helps,
Henry
