Speaking of nostalgia: what is it?

Speaking of nostalgia, received this delightful and unexpected gift yesterday.

Anyone know what it is?

I'll give the same hints I posted to my FB page:

  • It helps to be almost 60 or older.
  • It's about a foot and a half on a side.
  • The panel that looks red is actually a deep orange.

  • Bonus hint:
  • Related in a very oblique way to the Ford Mustang

A 1x1x1 Rubik's cube for the gently atrophying brain? :-)

Sorry, a tasteless joke I couldn't resist. Not being close to 60, I have no idea.

LOL, the only Rubik's Cube I'd ever be likely to solve.

My first thought was the 1x1 Rubik's cube too.

I'm in your target demographic but it reminds me more of the old Windows logo -- but then I was never a car guy.

Another hint dropped on FB: it's originally from somewhere in the New York City area.

And as cool a guess as it is, it's not Balok's Cube.

It's an end piece from a 1964/1965 New York City World's Fair Luminaire, retro-fitted with a standard light build for illumination.

I attended the Fair as a kid of 6 years old and remember these fondly. The Luminaires and the ballon domes for the Brass Rail eateries are some of my most vivid memories from the Fair.

(I always thought that that the balloons looked like a pile of onions.)

    What a great nostalgia piece!

    Indeed.

On a similar note: Does anyone remember these?

They were called "beehive" bulbs, and we had one as a nightlight when we were kids. It had a lovely pink colour, and lasted about 10 years (≈20,000 hours) until it finally got broken, by which time they were no longer being made.

They also produced an argon one (purple/UV) for rock hounds (of which I'm one), which I'd love to get my hands on.

When we had the boiler in our utility room, we used a similar bulb to indicate that the power was turned on.
