When I travel I do so with my laptop and at least one iPad. And I have a bag, similar to the one you mentioned, that splits into two sides so that they can both lay flat to go through security easily. What's not to believe about that?

Just because they are not in use during a flight doesn't mean that aren't being carried around.

I am sure personal laptops are being carried around. The need for carrying work + personal is what I'm a bit curious about. Only time I needed both was when I was travelling during vacations. So air travel observation seems reasonable to me but I do agree that it is a very limited sample and may not necessarily indicate anything.

If you have a special laptop bag, you can avoid taking the laptop out for security. See this checkpoint firendly description. That only works with one laptop. I used to use a checkpoint friendly bag. I stopped when my laptop got too heavy to carry in such a bag at the destination. (our laptops are bricks.) I now use an ergonomic computer backpack. Which I like better enough to not want to go back to the old bag anyway. I'd rather take out the laptop and use the backpack. If I had to use a briefcase, I'd be back to the checkpoint friendly bag in a heartbeat.
I just turned off the banner ad. Silly to run an ad for something that doesn't exist!
