Hi,

I had posted a question and it has earned a cow. Will I be able to see the cow provider?
This is the question

That topic did *not* earn any cows. If it had, and since you are the only poster on that topic, the cow would have been yours.

I am assuming that you noticed the cow in the forum listing? The forum listing's cow rating is the rating for the whole topic. This includes the total number of cows earned by the topic, along with other factors, such as the number of times the topic has been viewed. Arguably, it is unfortunate that the cow icon was used for it ... but oh well.

Ya I know that but the post listing showed cows. That is why I asked.

Yes. Exactly

Oh I see. But something else should be used to indicate the views right? Will this post be considered?

Yes, I also want to ask the same question.
How to find the cow provider.
This post of mine has earned cows, but I am not able to find the providers.

To be honest, I am actually not completely sure ... but ... I think that it is, once you have the right to grant cows, you will also be able to see your cow stats, such as the posts that you granted the cows to *and* your posts that received cows. In other words, you need a rank of rancher or above.

Is there an explanation of topical cows? Or the horseshoes?

Brian, this post explains the cows and other new features of the forum that were introduced in 2013.

You can give a post a cow if you think it's an especially good or useful post, just to show your appreciation to the author.

By "topical cows", I assume you mean the cow that show up on the forum listing? Hmmm... I actually don't know the formula. Additionally, I believe that part of it may be based on some internal stuff too, so the formula may not even be public. Again, not sure.... regardless, I suggest thinking of it as whether the system believes that it is important or not. The more cows the likelihood of being more important / useful.*

As for horseshoes on the forum, aren't you able to set it? If you think that a forum is more useful to you, then give it more horseshoes. The system will organize your forums based on it.

Hope this helps,
Henry

* BTW, there is some internal discussion to consider using a different icon instead of cows.

I'm not sure i ever tried to set it. But now that i know it affect organization, i might give it a try one day. Right now, email notification on topic posts works for me.

Thank you for all the information.

I never looked at the formula for the number of cows a topic has, but I think I noticed a few factors.
  • Age of the topic.
  • Number of posts.
  • Number of cows participants in the topic have. (Not sure about this one).
  • Cows awarded in the topic to participants.

  • The first one is readily apparent when a very old topic gets bumped.

I imagine thumbs in the topic also play a role.

Is there anything in your profile? I can see details of all your cows, but I don't know whether that information is only available to us mods.

Yes I think that information is available only to mods.
I cannot see any information in my profile except for the number of cows.

It is. Cows were granted by moderators or Ranchers "anonymously". (Mods can see but the users can't unless the person giving the cow chooses to say so)

If somebody grants an anonymous cow, wouldn't it be a bit invidious to search for the donor's identity?
