The Java Performance Companion Question: Java Performance 1st Edition obsolete?

Hello, Does the Java Performance Companion book can be called a replacement book of the Java Performance 1st Edition one?
I wonder if with the introduction of G1 as the default there is no point of keeping studying the content cover in the Java Performance book.

I trigger this questions because usually Java Performance book is the one I recommend to my students in the University.

The new book is really a complement to the original Java Performance book. So, I think you should still recommend the original book to your students, but if any of them would like to take a deeper look at G1 I think the new book is a good book to recommend. See also Charlie Hunt's response to the question "The Java Performance Companion book question" in this forum. He makes a good summary of the two books.

Even though G1 is becoming the default GC for HotSpot I think it is a good to understand the other GCs as well and memory management in general. This allows you to select and tune the GC the correct way. G1 will not always be the best fit for all applications.
