JVM = Java Virtual Machine

The JVM is the application that runs your compiled Java program. On your (assumed Windows) installation, it is the java.exe executable.

JVM (Java Virtual Machine) is an abstract machine. It is a application  that provides run time environment in which java byte code can be executed.Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is a software package that contains what is required to run a Java program. It includes a Java Virtual Machine implementation together with an implementation of the Java Class Library. JVM is platform dependent.That means There is separate JVM for every Operating System.

JVM is an interface between your Java class files and operating system. Each OS have different JVM to run Java .class files. This application knows how to interact with OS native library to open Java application components like file chooser, folder access, etc.
