Weblogic server instances

Hi
Does anybody know what it means by a Weblogic server instances. If we have more than one weblogic server instances running, does that mean the same app is running in two different instances independently. Is it use to do load-balancing?

Server instance can also mean specific to a single instance that is running on one particular machine(can be win/Linux/unix or any other os with a JRE available)

Each application server instance has its own J2EE configuration, J2EE resources, application deployment areas, and server configuration settings. Changes to one application server instance have no effect on other application server instances. You can have many application server instances within one administrative domain. Within a domain, all the server instances have the same Administration Server.
