How important is it to know how to create a JAR file manually? Using an IDE like Eclipse it's a simple task to create a JAR file with an associated Manifest. However, the Java books I've been referencing so far both describe the manual method. Is manual creation of a JAR something which is still worth knowing or is it enough to understand what's happening, without actually doing it i.e. let your IDE take the load?

Cheers,

Paul,
It's a good skill to know the basics by hand. Sometimes you aren't on a machine with an IDE or a build tool. (usually because it is a server).

For example, I find myself typing -xvf -cf commands periodically.

Ok, thanks. That's a good example. I'll make the effort to take on board the manual process :-)
