Even if for some reason you want to restrict editing, it makes perfect sense to allow it upto few minutes(15 mins. - half hour), because thats the time in which most people try to edit their post.

You do not need to quote in order to reply -- just use the big "Post Reply" button at the bottom. There is also a "Quick Reply" button too, which, admittedly, I rarely ever use.

As for the edit capability, well, that feature is currently in flux. And anything that I say at this point, would likely change. In the meantime though, sorry for the inconvenience.

hi abhay,
ranch restricts the greenhorn and even the ranch hand from editing till they earn 5 cows(accordingly,as i got).so if you really think to edit then simply ask for it to other members,in sometime after noticing you will get a favor.
and who told you that it's mandatory to quote in order to reply, please check at the bottom of last post in a topic-their you will see 5 buttons "post reply","quick reply","bookmark topic","watch topic" and a "new topic".kindly hit a reply button for replying.

kind regards,
Praveen.

Thanks, but I was talking about replying to a comment, not to the original post.

Really?!?!?  I thought that we temporarily disabled that feature / option too. And I see that you edited your post to prove it too. I guess we did not disable the feature...

I really did not know that. Have a cow.

A reply, of any type, is always placed at the end of the topic. So, you can quote any post to reply. Or you can just click the reply button on the bottom to reply without quoting any post.

The ranch does not currently support side threads as part of discussions. It is one big discussion... (Actually, this is not completely true. The forum does allow for the discussion about a post, but this feature is currently for moderation purposes only.)

Henry
Staff note (Henry Wong):

This is a demonstration of the "discussion about a post" feature...

But that might change without warning. We review editing from time to time and might not give any notification if we change the system.
