friends of mine in college recommended i look at BlueJ

know nothing about it...what you guys think?

It has some good points as a learning tool.  It encourages you to use object oriented programming.  It helps you see scope and encourages good formatting.  Is it professional IDE?  No, but since it sounds like you're in college maybe it's a good choice for now.

I personally don't like BlueJ. You probably have enough experience to use a full‑blown IDE, e.g. NetBeans, Eclipse or IntelliJ.

any reason why campbell? does it develop bad habits? is it not good for a noob to learn more oop?

It teaches proper OO, as you have already been told.
Once you get to using separate packages, BlueJ starts to fall down and has difficulty compiling things. At least it did last time I tried it, which was over ten years ago.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
