Apart from the jokes with Praveen Kumaar here: some people say that Linux boxes don't require anti‑virus programs, saying that any naughty activity would show up in the form of a popup requesting authorisation. I am never quite sure I believe that, but do you discuss viruses and other nasty programs in the book?

I had almost a same experience when i were taught linux in my semester,i simply ask my instructor that "can a linux contain a virus ?".he says No,Linux is virus free(yes that's why i like to learn by myself,he is doing the same job like a windows(infected)).what he says means linux is incapable of running programs and i quit attending classes(it will not effect my attendance as i am doing my course through a distance learning).as far as i know unix has various variants and probably they have different security models so it's difficult for a hacker(lot of work) to design a virus for different variants and along with these things unlike windows, password is must with a username in unix(so again they need to do some extra work).
And Campbell,
I have my reasons(everyone has) for using windows.but now i am trying to learn linux(so i just ask a question to @Steven,probably i have that right on ranch).anyway don't get me wrong with all these things.i have not any problem with your jokes,so you can continue again..

Kind Regards,
Praveen.

While I can't speak about the operating system itself, but The Ken Thompson Hack is quite an interesting read on how something used by the OS (i.e. a C compiler) can be infected in such a way that it both replicates and hides itself...

The book does get into security. There are less Linux viruses because of the permission-based nature of user accounts and because virus-makers spend less time designing Linux viruses. But if I could hack a package and get you to install it, I'd own your system. I said this in another thread, but a computer is only as secure as the user. If you're careless with Linux, your system can become compromised. But I provide tips on how to be safe!

Steven Ovadia wrote:. . . a computer is only as secure as the user. . . .

In which case there's no hope for my computers
Thank you.
