Hi Steven,

So how much of this book is appropriate for an old Unix user?  I work every day on AIX boxes.  I'm very comfortable with the shell, have written many scripts, and seldom refer to my unix in a nutshell book any more...

but I've never done anything with a linux distro on a  pc...

what would you reccomend for me?

I think it would be a good introduction to desktop Linux. The command stuff might be less useful to someone like you, but the process of learning what can and can't be done with desktop Linux might be fun for you. The book is really geared toward non-technical users, so parts of it might feel a bit slow to you, but in general, I think it would be a nice overview for someone like you. Like you'd get up-and-running and then sort of find your own way.

That sounds completely different from books like Linux in a Nutshell by Siever, Figgins, Love, and Robbins.

It is different! Linux in a Nutshell is great, but it's for technical users. This is for non-technical users who need different things from their operating system. I believe Linux is for everyone, but it's tougher to get non-technical people to switch. I wanted to write a book that would make the switch easy.

i'll have to check out the book.  I have an old PC I replaced. It would be a great candidate for a linux install, just to mess around with.

Learning is messy!
