This is first time I wrote a software/coding certification in my life. Scored only 54%. I used OCA Study Guide by Scott and Jeanne. I think I need to improve my speed as there were 20 questions left with only 20 mins left to finish exam. Any suggestions to practice or increase speed?

Practice doing the review questions in each chapter many times. Seriously. Doing it many times will train your brain to watch for patterns.

Also, don't leave any questions blank. If you don't know the answer just pick D (or C or whatever)

Your book is good. I have practiced review questions 4 or more times.
Now most of them are already in my brain, so much that it feels as if I have memorized and stopped using logic.

If you are starting to not focus on the "why", it is time to get fresh questions. Have you tried enthuware.com? You get lots of questions for $10.

In the OcajpFaq (besides other very useful information) and this thread you'll find an overview of all available (free and commercial) resources (study guides, mock exams, video courses,...) to thorougly prepare yourself for the certification exam. And on the OcajpWallOfFame you'll find plenty of (links to) experiences from other ranchers (including resources they have used). So it can be useful to determine which resources are useful (and which are not).

If you use the search function, you'll find plenty of topics with advice to prepare (and ace) the OCA exam. Here are a few:
  • Studying so hard just to fail(1z0-808)
  • Failing Java SE 8 Programmer I
  • Bad Experience with OCA 7 exams
  • Any tricks about how to manage the 120 min for so many question?
  • second failed OCAJP
  • Need some advice after failing the exam

  • Hope it helps!
    Kind regards,
    Roel
