Do you have the OCA 6 certificate?

You can go for the OCP 6 (1Z0-851) and then make an upgrade to OCP 8 (1Z0-813). The OCP 6 exam has 60 questions and 61% passing score. The upgrade exam has 60 questions and 63% passing score.

Or you can make the OCA 8 (1Z0-808) with 80 questions and 65% passing score and then make the OCP 8 (1Z0-809) with 85 questions and 65% passing score.

Both ways have 2 exams. The OCP 6 is... well, outdated already.

Is up to you.

Yes, you can get the OCP 6 certificate after the 1Z0-851 exam and don't make any upgrade to SE 8. But for what purpose?

Java 7 and 8 brought many new interesting features. Java SE 6 has no public updates anymore, Java SE 7 as well:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html

If you want to learn something new, be up to date and be certified, Java 8 certification is your choice. If you just want a certificate for your desc drawer, you can get OCP 6 certificate.

Just my opinion.

Yes, you can! The OCPJP6 exam is not yet listed on Oracle's Exam Retirement Schedule. Since the OCPJP6 certification exam is quite old, it might be useful to have a look at that page once a month during your preparation to see if it is not added to the list. So you know before which date you must have passed the exam.

Note: the OCPJP5 certification exam was retired on Mar 1, 2016.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
