Both of my children do athletics and I mostly take videos of all the track-and-field events they participate in. My current camera (Olympus SZ-31MR) has 24-optical zoom and has the full-hd-video possibilty.
It creates great movies but I am not so happy about the pictures.
I want to buy a new camera where I can shoot nice pictures, have the possibility of full-hd-video and have a decent optical zoom. I was thinking of Panasonic TZ100 or going for a DSLR...
I used to sell photo cameras at age 18. From those old days I remember, you ought to decide, whether you want to film or make pictures - can't be both good. So my suggestion is - get photo camera and video camera, yes, not that comfortable as you need to carry on both, but you'd be happy about both of their quality.
Now what's regarding photo quality - you may often use zoom, luckily it is optical, digital zoom would lower quality quicker than you can blink, however, always is better to come closer to the object, rather than zoom it, because each time you zoom, every hand shake gets strengthened x times, hence tripod needed, otherwise you might get fuzzy photos.
I'm not professional, but I know you can find lots of informational reviews, buying guide at professional website - https://www.dpreview.com/ it is a photographers "CodeRanch".
