I wonder if I read Java SE 8 Programmer II Study Guide by Jeanne Boyarsky and Scott Selikoff, will I be able to take both exams:

Java SE 8 Programmer I 1Z0-808
Java SE 8 Programmer II 1Z0-809

?

OCA, Oracle Certified Associate Java SE 8 Programmer I Study Guide, Exam 1Z1-808 is a comprehensive study guide for those taking the Oracle Certified Associate Java SE 8 Programmer I exam (1Z1-808)

OCP: Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 8 Programmer II Study Guide is your comprehensive companion for preparing for Exam 1Z0-809 as well as upgrade Exam 1Z0-810 and Exam 1Z0-813

Yes, I know, but I thought since 1Z0-809 is harder, you will get the skill to pass 1Z0-808 most likely. Thought maybe you could get away with reading just one book, for both exams.

No, you can't. OCP has OCA exam as prerequisite, it means, that you have to know all the OCA topics very well to understand and use the OCP topics. The OCA Guide is very detailed and is targeting the OCA in its full complexity. The OCP Guide builds on top of the OCA content. There are parts, repeating the OCA topics, but only in few words, to refresh your knowledge, not to teach you again the OCA content.
Both books are better and cheaper investment into certification than Oracle trainings (compare the prices).

Note that if you buy both books as a kit/set, you save a little money.

Ok,

Thanks for answers. I already have the SCJP 6 certification so I'm also considering just the upgrade exam.

For the upgrade exam, you only need one book (the OCP one).

I would highly recommend buying both I and II .. I scored 97% in OCA and 100% in OCP in a span of 4 months i prepared for exam with very little prior knowledge of Java. Almost all the exam topics were covered(except for some JDBC topics but they were not so difficult). If you preparing for OCA exam please go through the 1 and 2 chap in OCP book. It will be useful.
