This forum is listed as the Spring Forum in the Frameworks section, and I've heard Spring referred to as the Spring Framework. In that sense, what exactly is a framework?

The dictionary definition at "http://www.dictionary.com/browse/framework?s=t" defines framework as:

1. a skeletal structure designed to support or enclose something.

2. a frame or structure composed of parts fitted and joined together.

3. the construction or sale of frames.

4. work done in, on, or with a frame.

Do any of these fit what is meant by framework when someone talks about the Spring Framework?

Software framework may be of more help than the general definition.
